This supposed act of generosity towards Squire sits curiously with Weller’s public image, and is certainly in stark contrast to drummer Buckler, who, on gatecrashing Squire’s rehearsals one day, actually smashed up what he thought was Esposito’s guitar by throwing it down the stairs. ‘The funny thing is, it wasn’t mine,’ Enzo remembers. ‘It belonged to Perry Clapton, the cousin of another local guitarist who was slightly better known than us, Eric. Once, it might have even been the great man’s himself.’ But Weller and Brookes didn’t see the funny side and could imagine how they would have felt if the roles had been reversed. Dilanda: ‘That was quite out of character for Buckler. Usually he was fairly reserved and shy, he didn’t really associate with the rest of us that much. I don’t know what was going on there.’
